What is NTSA Vehicle Inspection?

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) conducts mandatory vehicle inspections to ensure cars are roadworthy and safe. All private vehicles must pass inspection before:

  • Initial registration after purchase
  • Renewing annual license (fitness certificate)
  • If involved in accident or modification

The inspection checks whether the vehicle meets the technical, safety, and environmental standards NTSA applies. Time at the centre varies with the queue. Confirm the current fee on the NTSA portal before you go. Rockland Auto does not book or pay the inspection.

Step 4: The Inspection Process

On inspection day, here's what happens:

Document Review (5 minutes)

Visual Inspection (15 minutes)

Inspector walks around the vehicle checking:

  • Exterior condition (no major damage affecting safety)
  • All lights functioning correctly
  • Wipers and mirrors operational
  • Horn working
  • Tires in good condition with minimum tread
  • Engine bay for leaks or missing safety items
  • Interior seatbelts and emergency exits

Brake Test (10 minutes)

Depending on vehicle type, brakes are tested on a dynamometer (roller test) or manually. Braking response must meet safety standards.

Emission Test (5 minutes, if applicable)

For petrol vehicles under 5 years, emission gas is tested. Must meet environmental standards.

Road Test (Optional, 10 minutes)

For new vehicles or those with previous failures, inspector may take a short test drive to verify steering, braking, and overall drivability.

Common NTSA Inspection Failures

Most common reasons for failure:

  • 🚫 Worn tires: Less than 2mm tread depth (KES 10,000–40,000 to replace)
  • 🚫 Defective lights: Broken headlights, tail lights, or indicator bulbs (KES 500–2,000 to fix)
  • 🚫 Brake issues: Soft brake pedal, uneven braking, or worn pads (KES 5,000–20,000 to repair)
  • 🚫 Emissions: Excess smoke or failing gas test (requires tuning or repairs)
  • 🚫 Windshield damage: Large cracks or chips (KES 15,000–50,000 to replace)

  • 🚫 Steering issues: Excessive play or unresponsive steering (requires alignment or repair)
  • 🚫 Missing safety equipment: Seatbelts not functional or fire extinguisher missing

If You Fail Inspection

Don't panic. Failure is common. You have options:

  • Get a list of failures: Inspector provides detailed list of what failed and why.
  • Repair the issues: Take vehicle to a mechanic. Most repairs are straightforward (brakes, lights, tires).
  • Re-inspect: Book another inspection after repairs. Usually same day or next day possible.
  • Cost & time: Most repairs take 1–3 days and cost KES 5,000–30,000 depending on issues.

Tips for Passing NTSA Inspection

  • ✓ Service your vehicle 1–2 weeks before inspection
  • ✓ Replace worn tires before inspection (don't wait for failure)
  • ✓ Fix all dashboard warning lights in advance
  • ✓ Test brakes by heavy braking a few times before inspection
  • ✓ Ensure all lights are working (replace bulbs)
  • ✓ Clean windshield and mirror glass
  • ✓ Arrive early to give inspector ample time
  • ✓ Be polite and cooperative (inspectors appreciate it)

Fitness Certificate Validity

Once you pass inspection and receive the fitness certificate:

  • Valid for 12 months: You must renew before expiry or face fines.
  • Renewal process: Same as initial inspection. Book appointment and repeat steps.
  • Expired certificate: NTSA can fine you or impound the vehicle. Confirm the current penalty with NTSA.
